The Animal Welfare Board of India (AWBI) has directed the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) to take action against illegal meat shops.
The AWBI took cognisance of a report by the Federation of Indian Animal Protection Organisations (FIAPO) which revealed the horrific conditions in which chicken and goats are handled before being slaughtered in illegal meat shops.
AWBI secretary S K Dutta directed the FSSAI to take action against the offenders (illegal meat shops) in adherence to rules under the Prevention of Cruelty to Animal Act, which stipulates how operation and conduct of slaughter of animals is to be done in a manner that is least cruel and prevents unnecessary pain or suffering.
FIAPO had conducted investigations in seven cities — Chennai, Delhi, Bhubaneshwar, Bengaluru, Kolkata, Hyderabad and Indore. Among the seven cities surveyed, Delhi was the biggest offender followed by Bhubaneshwar, Bangalore and Kolkata.
